Macintosh Operating Systems

January 21st, 2010

Ever wondered what the name of your Macintosh OS X version was called? Good luck finding this info on your actual computer. If you point your mouse to the Apple in the top left bar of your computer and choose “about this mac” it will only tell you what version of OS X you are currently running but not the name of that version.

Apple - About this Mac

Why wouldn’t Apple do this? I have had so many issues with other software in the past and it will ask are you on Panther or Tiger but not the version? How the heck would I know? Its nowhere to be found on your computer unless you pull out your install discs (if you have them still).  So, I decided to compile a helpful list of past Mac OS X versions and names for anyone that might ever need them.

Macintosh Operating Systems by version, name and date:

System (1-6) • 1984-92
Mac OS 7 • 1992-96
Mac OS 8 • 1997
Mac OS 9 • 1999
Mac OS X v10.0 “Cheetah” • 2001
Mac OS X v10.1 “Puma” • 2002
Mac OS X v10.2 “Jaguar” • 2003
Mac OS X v10.3 “Panther” • 2004
Mac OS X v10.4 “Tiger” • 2005
Mac OS X v10.5 “Leopard” • 2008
Mac OS X v10.6 “Snow Leopard” • 2009
Mac OS X v10.7 “Lion” • 2011

I hope you found this information useful! As a graphic designer always upgrading software etc I use this page often.
